| San
Cristobal or Chatham the easternmost island of Galapagos is
also one of the oldest. Eroded volcanic peaks in the northern
part of the island and rich vegetation in the southern portion
characterize the island.
The
town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the capital and administrative
centre of the Galapagos Islands. The two main visitor sites
here are El Junco Lagoon, Kicker Rock and Isla Lobos.
El
Junco Lagoon:
Is located in the highlands of the island at an altitude
of 700m. This lagoon is the only freshwater lake in the Galapagos.
The lake and its surrounding comprise a beautiful landscape,
typical of the humid zone of this island. El Junco is almost
round in shape and 6m deep. You can observe white-cheeked pintail
ducks and common gallinules. Vegetation includes miconia bushes
and endemic tree ferns.
Kicker
Rock or Leon Dormido: a magnificent rock in the middle of
the sea with the shape of a sleeping lion. Small vessels can
pass through the rock, which is divided into two parts forming
a channel between them.
Isla
Lobos (Sea Lion Island): a small island, one hour by boat
from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. On its rocky shores you find sea
lions and blue-footed boobies in a particularly tranquil and
scenic atmosphere.
On
approach to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno it is not unusual to see
a school of dolphins swimming alongside your yacht.
On
the north east side of San Cristobal you find Punta Pitt.
It is one of the two places where you can see a whole colony
of red-footed boobies (the other one is on Tower Island). See
also masked boobies, hawks and sea lions. |
