Chinese
Hat, its name describes the island`s shape, is a small island
off the southeast tip of Santiago. The landscape is dominated
by volcanic rubble, including sharp outcroppings, cracked lava
formations and very fragile lava tubes which break when you
step on them. So it is important to stay on the trail.
The
landing is on a beautiful crescent-shaped white sand beach,
home to Sea Lions and Sally Lightfoot Crabs. The trail on Sombrero
Chino's explores its volcanic origin, one of the most evident
in the islands.
National
Park Service restrictions have limited the number of visitors
to Sombrero Chino. Multi-day cruises with 12 passengers or less
are the only ones permitted at this site.
In
the waters just off James Island you find excellent snorkelling. |
